Kefalonia is located approximately in the middle of the Ionian Sea, opposite Peloponnese and at a short distance from mainland Greece. The visitor has a variety of options on how to get to the island, depending on where he is coming from.
The most frequent itineraries to and from Kefalonia are realized from the port of Kyllini at Elia. Every day, the ferries of the two companies that serve the line, connect the port of Poros, in the south-eastern side of Kefalonia, with the opposite shore. The trip takes about two hours, while at specific days of the week, there is a direct connection between Kyllini and the port of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. By car, Poros is at 40 km from Argostoli, 26 km from Sami and 13 km from the touristic Skala. You can also access Kefalonia from the port of Astakos in Aitoloakarnania. The ship arrives at the port of Sami, with daily routes (details here), while the trip lasts about 3.5 hours. From Sami you can reach by car or by bus Argostoli (26 km), Fiskardo (39 km), Poros (26 km) and other destinations on the island.
If you are on one of the neighboring islands of Ithaca, Zakynthos or Lefkada, there are itineraries realized from these islands to the ports of Sami, Fiskardo or Pessada, in southern Kefalonia.
if you do not have a means to reach the ports of Central Greece that have a connection to Kefalonia, you can take the KTEL of Kefalonia: there are daily itineraries departing from Athens, servicing also interim destinations on the way. The central bus station of Kefalonia is located in Argostoli, at the Koutavos Lagoon.

The island also has an airport, located just outside of Argostoli. There are daily flights to and from the airport “El Venizelos” in Athens and the flight time is approximately one hour. Charter flights connect the island with the rest of the Europe.
